Each year, the exhibitions of the BEYOND TABOO series present the result of the collected experiences and works of a group of artists associated with the ArtBrut Gallery & Studio. Using their own experiences and the language of art, the artists break stereotypes and discover the spheres of dreams, hidden desires, dilemmas and needs related to feelings, carnality, sensuality and sexuality, but also those connected with material situations or life independence. They refer to difficult and non-obvious relationships with the outside world, the self, and loved ones, as well as the reception and social situation of the excluded, including people with disabilities, in different times, cultures, and social systems—exhibition BEYOND TABOO XI. MYSTERIOUS, HIDDEN, SECRET will be closing the year celebrating the 15th anniversary of the ArtBrut Gallery and Studio.
CURATORIAL TEXT
BEYOND TABOO XI. MYSTERIOUS, HIDDEN, SECRET
The theme of the exhibition and its idea is perplexing and ambiguous. People often hide certain facts because of their sensitivity and their uncertainty about the reactions of those around them in self-defence. But they also create their secret worlds as an alternative to everyday life that does not fulfil many of our perceptions. We create them as places that are ours alone, to which the code of access rests only in our mind. Secrets are part of the life of almost each of us and can be our inner Agora, where every thought can resound and exist with impunity, without external judgement, and without being confronted with real consequences. In a way, our secret thoughts and secrets are our freedom, and as areas ‘where anything can happen’, they have much in common with art. Just as in the creative process, our ideas can only be limited by our imagination. The exhibition will bring a wide spectrum of themes. From depicting a fragment of one's universe, references to the past and recapitulations through conspiracy theories, secrets, and obsessions to dreams of an ideal future. Some artists, however, have declared that there is no need to hide anything in their lives, no need for a secret confession. The exhibition will feature wall paintings, paintings, drawings, objects, installations and videos.
The subjects of the exhibition are mysterious, hidden and secret things. Each of the artists interprets them in his/her way, thus taking us on a multi-level journey through their hitherto ‘hidden’ realms.
