There are special times in world history when reality suddenly accelerates. Before that, however, some signals and signs warn of the solstice, of what is coming.
An environment shaped by the image and resemblance of our erratic tastes and endless needs puts enormous pressure on the planet. The climate strike, migration, the resurgent fashion for dictatorial rules, social unrests, the struggle for equal rights for women, ethnic, religious and gender minorities, the Covid-19 pandemic, all this makes 2020 appear to be an exceptional period in which the problems of humanity have focused. These are in no way peaceful times!
The world reflects in us like in a lens. All of us are affected and we cope with it differently. This year, the feeling of anxiety and fear accompanies us every day, it comes from within ourselves and from the outside, from the world and so it is even more difficult to tame or overcome. On the one hand, this situation paralyses us, preventing us from thinking of new scenarios, thus we are using familiar solutions. On the other hand, the emergency and its consequences may lead to a radical redefinition of the framework which defines our reality and to the search for a new path.
In the series of the Beyond Taboo exhibitions, each year we present the effect of the collected experience of a group of artists associated with the ArtBrut Gallery & Studio focusing on difficult, non-obvious topics, often from a taboo area.
In difficult times of isolation and a complete change of reality, artists shift their boundaries of freedom, break taboos, speak boldly through art. Their own experiences, interpersonal relations, observation of their immediate surroundings during the pandemic, uncertainty about the immediate future as well as their concern for the fate of the planet have become the natural content of the exhibition.
The exhibition BEYOND TABOO VII. ANXIETY AND FEAR was created in the real space of the ArtBrut Gallery & Studio, but due to the epidemiological situation, it will be available mainly online. We are not planning a public opening. During the events in the ArtBrut Gallery & Studio, sanitary restrictions and epidemiological guidelines apply. We also invite you to view the documentation of the exhibition and participate in its accompanying events, presented on the ArtBrut Gallery's website, through the social media and on the YouTube channel.
