Whither freedom?...

Event date: 16.06.2016 - 17:30

This exhibition is unique - its subject matter almost defies description.

Freedom - be it material or spiritual, private or public, fleeting or enduring - embraces an infinity of ideas, interpretations and theories. Here we can hardly begin to summarise the topic; we do, however, represent the extant and evolving work of these artists and their concepts of freedom.

We invite you too to express yourself and participate in discussions concerning freedom from your own perspectives.
This is an exhibition of questions rather than something simply to provoke philosophical debate, rather it invites reflection on specific aspects of freedom.

This is an exhibition of questions. Both fundamental and more specific. Questions which have one thing in common: leaving aside philosophical sensitivity, without going into philosophical beliefs - they prompt reflection on specific aspects of freedom. The artists asked their tough questions about freedom to six people - men and women, people of various professions and positions. It turned out that the answers, often seemingly unambiguous and categorical, became a prelude to further reflection and exploration posing ethical, social and also purely practical dilemmas.

With their questions the artists from the ArtBrut Gallery filter our reality. The filter they apply is unique and valuable because it requires us to open our minds to completely new contexts, to examine the notion of freedom from fresh perspective and thereby dispense with earlier preconceptions. The oeuvre presented by these artists is their strident voice in a discussion about the freedom and autonomy of persons with disabilities in Poland. It’s a voice that should be heard.

Also on show are materials from the performance of Theatre 21 'Passover is a celebration of freedom' organised in collaboration with the Museum of the History of Polish Jews POLIN, which took place at the end of April this year in Warsaw.
On July 5th we invite you to a meeting and co-operative presentations by artists from the ArtBrut Gallery and Theatre 21. The meeting is part of the events accompanying the exhibition.

Our exhibition 'Whither freedom ?. . . ' is an event thematically linked to the 12th Brave Festival – ‘Outcasts’. The main programme of this year's festival includes two performances of Theatre 21: 'Falls. Episode 2 'and 'Clowns or about a family. Episode 3 '.

The exhibition has been organised within a public task entitled:RUNNING ARTBRUT GALLERY AND STUDIO FOR SOCIAL & CULTURAL INCLUSION FOR PERSONS WITH INTELLECTIAL DISABILITIES AND MENTAL DISORDERS IN THE YEARS 2016-2018 financed by the Municipality of Wroclaw.
